Quality Tutors
studentAll tutors on our list are screened as to their qualifications and experience in education. The director, an experienced educator who has worked in the tutoring business in the Bay Area since 1982, personally interviews all applicants for our roster of tutors. The backgrounds of our tutors vary, but all have at least a bachelor's degree. About half have advanced degrees. They all must have some prior experience in tutoring or teaching before coming to our service. Some of the tutors are credentialed elementary or secondary schoolteachers. There are also Stanford graduates. Some members are retired teachers or substitute teachers. Others work in other professions and do tutoring part time. What they all have in common is a love of teaching and a desire to help students learn. The reputation of One To One Tutoring Service continues to attract well-qualified applicants. Several tutors have been with the service since
                                                              the 1980s.

Methods
kid readingTutors approach tutoring in a variety of ways. They learn of the student's specific needs from a parent, the student, and / or the student's classroom teacher or counselor. An initial session of evaluation and planning will lead to good use of succeeding sessions. Listening to the student and being able to convey an idea to the student is the art that a tutor brings to the process.

Teaching methods are as individual as the students and tutors themselves. The tutor plans for the particular requirements of his or her pupil. The student is assured of the undivided attention of a skilled adult whose sole concern is the student's learning objective. The student knows he / she is not being judged in terms of others, but is being evaluated only on the increased understanding and improvement he / she alone shows.

Tutoring Makes the Difference
Tutoring is a one-to-one experience in learning. It has no equal in effectiveness when there is real rapport between the student and the tutor. In a one-on-one situation with the instructor, mere memorization will not do. A skilled tutor will know when concepts are understood. Students who receive this kind of help find that learning becomes stimulating and more enjoyable, and their desire to achieve their full potential becomes reinforced. The student becomes more proficient in absorbing material presented in regular school curricula. In this manner, tutors are helping students learn for better understanding. As the student becomes more comfortable with his or her school material, learning becomes less frustrating.

As one tutor expressed it, "I know my job is done when the student is doing well in his class and doesn't need my help any more."
